Our client asked us to cane this seat. Sometimes it's pretty straightforward. But not this time.
If you look closely you see that the side, back and seat panels share holes for the cane to be woven through. That means that the sides and back panels become collateral damage if we stay true to the original.
Staying true to the original intent is important to us. However, replacing all four caned panels would have cost thousands of dollars and could have created more damage to the frame than intended.
The solution we presented to the client was to build a new frame to fit over the existing seat and then rout a groove to install pre-woven cane and then color it to blend with the existing panels. The bonus was that the original intent was still there.
We are happy to be associated with many fine interior designers as our clients.
